University Collaboration & Community Work

The focus of this program was to integrate local community service projects with a collaboration with TRIO students from Universidad de Sagrado Corazon in San Juan. For two days, GCU and Sagrado students worked together on local community projects that included cleaning up houses for local non-profit organizations to be used by families being displaced in a local flood zone area and contributing to gardening work (composting and weeding) at a local urban organic garden and non-profit.

Students across both universities connected and made new bonds and friendships while sharing in the spirit and meaning of TRIO.

Sophia Heitner: “This trip was truly eye-opening for me. The experience that impacted me the most was the service we provided by cleaning homes for families in need. I had no idea about the flooding that had made some homes uninhabitable, and learning about it was a real shock. Being able to help turn these houses back into homes for families was an incredible and meaningful experience. I’m grateful to have been part of such a powerful gesture!”
