Llamas, Alpacas, Guanaco, And Vicuña, oh my!

Hola amigos!

Today we began our day with a light breakfast then we were picked up promptly at 7am for our city tour. By bus, we were first taken to a scenic overlook of Cusco city where we were able to take a few pictures. Next we stopped at Tambomach’ay where after a short hike we saw an ancient Inca hideout. Saqsaywaman was another great Inca fortress that we hiked up. After that we were excited to see Pukapukara and to feed so many camelidos sudamericanos (llamas and alpacas)! Our final stop of the city tour was Q’enqo then we were dropped off at Cusco city for a bite to eat.

After lunch our day continues and we began our volunteering in the local clinic. We set up our supplies and treated patients with various different stations. Gabby did a great job at admissions as well as floating around to help others with translating. The rest of us broke into groups and did vitals, tested for HIV, anemia and blood sugar, took a chief complaint and assessed patients head to toe, then finished with seeing the doctor and receiving medications. We are all still getting used to the differences in Peruvian culture as well as showering with cold water and the water turning off often! Tomorrow we will be setting up a clinic at a different location and enjoying more of Cusco.
